flea markets

josh and i enjoyed the long weekend together and we managed to hit up a few flea markets. there was nothing outstanding to be found, but we still had a lot of fun just digging around in the junk. here are my hauls:

my favorite find from sunday was this retro bucket chair. we're having a good time decking out the basement in tacky late 60s/70s decor. i've seen a lot of versions of this chair (it's still a popular design today), but i'm not sure when ours is from. the cover is made of a naugahyde-type material and it has a wicker frame on the back for support.

here are a couple more things:

Photobucket

for some reason i'm really into vintage phones lately. i will never use them, i just like to display them, but i really like crazy colors and designs. there are a couple i have my eye on that i'm hoping to stumble across in the wild rather than pay collectors prices. i liked the color combo on this one, and the fact that it had the rotary dial inside.

Photobucket

we had this bigmouth singers toy when we were little and it brings back fond memories. i saw one at a flea market a few weeks ago and kinda regretted leaving it there. when i saw this one with its box for only $3 i had to get it. it reminds me so much of sesame street/muppets and i just think its adorable.

Photobucket

Photobucket

also found some 45s (otis redding pictured here) and this LP record box for only $2, which was a helluva score.

Photobucket

and then there was THIS. it's a bit risque, so i'm warning you now. i can't pass up vintage risque gag gifts and this one was too weird to leave behind. the guy had a whole box of new old stock and they were only $1 each, i really should have picked up more to hand out as presents! ha.

it starts off innocent enough, i suppose...

Photobucket

and then you KNOW something's up...

Photobucket

and then! yeah, that's totally what you think it is:

Photobucket

i'm not sure i get the joke (free love? hippies are so gross they must love putting penises on their mouth??) but its still great.

here was monday's junk. so i'm thirty and i kind of like toys, so what?:

Photobucket

some 80s sea wees (had those as a kid, plus if i choose to sell 'em they get a decent amount on ebay) and some chicken nuggets in monster costumes (i <3 food with faces!)

Photobucket

mayor mccheese cup to replace the one that went missing:

Photobucket

blue jean record box:

Photobucket

and this cool pole lamp, which is missing a pole and has some cracked shades but for as cheap as it was i'll find a way to make something work!

Photobucket

our wedding is exactly one month from today (AAAHH!) so i really need to stop spending money and finish getting everything ready. probably won't see any junk from me in a while, but in the meantime, you should totally buy some of MINE and help me afford this big party :)

hot trash shenannigans

had a fun show last nite with sonny vincent and the bad reactions as guests. they played a live set, and sat down for an impromptu interview that my friend/follow-up programmer did. we heard stories about sonny's red velvet pants/no underwear debacle and how it led to him fighting patti smith group's lenny kaye on some fancy stage, his feelings on disco superstars, the last time he saw stiv bators, and his love/hate relationship with the word "punk." it was a great night. this morning everyone stopped back here to pick up cd copies of last nite's show and to have some coffee and bagels. toasting bagels in the kitchen and hearing sonny vincent in my living room singing along to the little richard record that was on the stereo was one of those "is this really my life? because it's kinda weird and awesome" moments. we even bonded over our love for the monkees, and he insisted he was "almost sick over" our house and all the cool stuff in it. ha! tonite the boys are in columbus and tomorrow they are back here in cleveland to play at the bar. go catch them on tour if they stop in your city! you won't regret it.

new vintage for you and another horriblefest for the books

i spent the past weekend at horriblefest here in cleveland. i can't believe this fest has lasted 7 long, painful years. ha. and i am proud to report that we made it out with only minimal damage (read: some bruises and a sore foot). cleveland has a reputation (at least within this scene) of being rather rough -- something that horriblefest's attendees enjoy playing up with a sort of "anything goes" atmosphere. the fest itself is all about answering the question "what is the most ridiculous thing that can top THAT?" and everyone feeds off that. for example: what would be a ridiculous addition to the fest? a hot tub in the back parking lot. what would be more ridiculous? someone dumping dishsoap in the water. even MORE ridiculous? a bunch of tattooed dudes getting naked in said hot tub. i mean, its just nonstop like this. ALL. WEEKEND. LONG.

part of me loves it and part of me thinks, "i am either getting too old for this, or i've just been too smart for it all along." not to diss something i had a hand in (helping to organize the fest since year one, NOT lending a hand in stupid naked drunk stunts). but this year's ridiculousness included the return of the hot tub and a "drum circle" where brainwashed youth played a set with three drummers and three complete drum sets. totally unnecessary. totally horriblefest.

in the past, ridiculousness has included admission to smash a (donated) car in the back parking lot, putting one of the wildest bands of the lineup in a tiny apartment above the bar to perform their set (where i watched a kid get his front tooth knocked out), and mr. california performing his entire set while standing inside a dumpster. this is only the tip of the iceberg, believe you me. i should write a book.

here is some pictorial evidence, in the few calm moments when i could risk busting out the camera without it getting pulverized:

in other news, i added some new vintage goodies to the shop today. if you haven't been to the store in a while, now's the time to check it out...i'm running a store-wide sale to try to make some money for the wedding next month, so if you enter the coupon code "WEDDINGBELLS" at checkout you will get 15% off your order! there's lots of vintage burlesque photos, records, pretty dresses and more just wasting away in my closet that needs a good home.

sunday junkin

josh and i got up early for a change and hit up some junk spots. we came home with an unintentional theme: retro red lighting.

first we found this hanging chain lamp. we have a similar green one in the basement and we pick them up whenever we can for cheap. not sure where this one is going to go yet but we love it!

Photobucket

Photobucket

then as we were walking back to our car about to throw in the towel for the day, i literally almost ran into these monsters. when they aren't lit up, they are solid red rectangles of heavy plastic with clear plastic bases and a frosted panel on top that you can remove. they are about 4 feet tall. the guy who sold them to us told us they were from the 70s...while i'm not positive he's right, they are still cool. we can't tell if they are homemade or not; there are no tags or maker marks. the cords are not old, but that very easily could have been replaced at a later date. anyone seen anything like these before?

Photobucket
we weren't sure if we wanted to put them in the boat room or not, but as soon as we turned them on and set them near the bar we knew they found their home.

Photobucket

Photobucket

with the lights out, the room looks amazing!

i also found a small stack of 45s, and some great vintage pins. yay!
